I have to be perfectly honest, I tend to drink my coffee Caveman style. I ground the coffee beans, I then place a heaped teaspoon of ground coffee in my cup and fill with hot water. I know this method leaves a pile of coffee grounds in the cup which aren't particularly nice when consumed, but that's the way I've always done it. But now I have this Breville coffee machine I can drink my coffee in a more civilized way. The only problem for me is that I'm the only coffee drinker in our house so a pot of coffee is often way too much for me. But, having said that, this machine has a measure so you can make anywhere between 4 cups of coffee right up to 12 cups if you wish.

The coffee machine came well protected in a cardboard box. It was so well protected that I had a terrible job trying to remove the jug, along with cardboard packing the machine. I had to bite the bullet and pull hard, hoping I wouldn't snap the handle off. So I do feel the packing could be improved as it really is difficult to unpack.

The machine is made silver coloured plastic with a gold band around the middle. This has a hinged lid which lifts the right hand side, inside is a lift out coffee basket with washable filter. Also inside is the water reservoir, this has a lift out advanced water filtration cartridge which should remove any impurities the water before entering the machine. There are 2 cartridges provided in the box, although I could find no mention of the length of time before the cartridge needs to be replaced? Spare cartridges can be purchased Breville.

Making coffee is simple. The coffee/water levels are colour coded depending on how many cups of coffee you wish to make. Using the provided scoop, place the coffee in the filter: 1 scoop = 4 cups (light blue), 1.5 scoops = 6 cups (orange)... and so on. Then fill the water tank up to the ed colour, there is a tube measure scale on the outside of the coffee machine, it has all the colour levels clearly marked. You are then ready to go.

This machine can be set to brew your coffee straight away, or if you wish you can set the timer so it brews up at a set time. This is ideal if you want a cup of coffee as soon as you wake in the morning, or perhaps when you arrive home work? The machine will also display how long your coffee has been brewed and how fresh it is, this will switch off after 30 minutes has lapsed. I do find I need to add slightly more coffee than recommended as I prefer my coffee to be on the strong side, but that's not an issue as coffee strength is covered in the user guide.

A rock solid coffee machine that seems well made, looks good, and does what's expected of it.
