When is Laylatul Qadr?

The last 10 days of Ramadan are when Laylatul Qadr takes place. Ramadan is split into three parts of 10 days each. These are called Ashras. In Arabic, "ashra" means "ten." Islam teaches that Allah first showed the Prophet Muhammad the first verses of the Qur'an on one of the last ten nights of Ramadan, on a night with an odd number.

Many Muslims choose to celebrate Laylatul Qadr on the 27th night of Ramadan, though no one knows for sure which. For people who started Ramadan on April 2, this means that Laylatul Qadr will happen on the night of April 29. On that date, the fast will end at 8:29 pm in London. Depending on where you are in the country, times will be a little different.

What is Ramadan?

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. It is said to be the time when God gave the Quran to Prophet Muhammad after he fasted for a month. In Arabic, the word for its name is "scorching heat."

Muslims have to go without food and drink, including water, during daylight hours for 30 days as a way to honour their faith and think about it. One of the five pillars of Islam is fasting during Ramadan. The other four are the Shahadah (statement of faith), Salat (prayer), Zakat (charity), and the Hajj pilgrimage.

During Ramadan, Muslims give more Salat to Allah as a way of giving thanks, and the fasting ritual helps them understand the pain of others. People who are fasting are encouraged to read the Quran, and the holy text is read at the Tarawih, which are special prayers held every night during the month.

What's the story behind it?

Laylatul Qadr is sometimes called the Night of Power or the Night of Decree. People think that the last 10 nights of Ramadan are some of the best of the year, and the Qur'an says that Laylatul Qadr is "better than a thousand months."

It is the night when God is thought to have sent the Angel Gabriel down from heaven to tell the Prophet Muhammad the first verses of the Islamic holy book. Muslims believe that Allah gives blessings, answers prayers, and forgives sins on this night.

How do Muslims mark it?

The most important part of Laylatul Qadr is praying. Muslims often pray all night, which is called Qiyam. Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) is said to have said, "His past sins will be forgiven if he stays up and prays on Laylatul Qadr out of faith and the hope of a reward."

When is Eid al-Fitr?

Eid al-Fitr is one of the two biggest holidays that Muslims celebrate every year. The other is Eid al-Adha, which happens later in the summer and remembers how Abraham was willing to give his son to Allah. People see it as a spiritual way to thank Allah for giving them strength and endurance.

People are also expected to give and be kind during this time, which is called Zakat al-Fitr. On the day of Eid, unlike the 30 days before, people are not allowed to fast. Prayers will start the Eid celebrations at dawn, which usually happen at a mosque.
