Having trouble getting to sleep?

Report

Insomnia can be a real curse.

Sometimes it's brought on by stress, sometimes by noise outside, sometimes just by too many late nights. You toss, you turn, and you can't get to sleep.

Fortunately help could be on its way to you quickly in a box from Amazon!

For instance, listening to white noise can help blanket out the noise in the street outside. White noise machines can also deliver soothing noises like birdsong and rain falling, and even (I promise, I'm not making this up) pink noise, which studies have proven to reduce brain activity while you're asleep, so you sleep more deeply.

You could also help yourself sleep by using aromatic essential oils in a diffuser. For relaxation, bergamot, chamomile and lavender are often suggested. A diffuser helps distribute the aroma evenly through the air in your room and will make the scent last longer.

These essential oils can also help you if you use them in a bubble bath. Research studies show that ten minutes in a nice warm bath can help you get to sleep ten minutes more quickly. It relaxes the muscles and dulls any little aches and pains from the day. Add some relaxing oil and the effect will be even greater.

Chamomile is good in a herbal tea; some infusions mix in other herbs too, so you can vary the taste a little. Don't drink too much of it - and not immediately before you turn in; it's best about three-quarters of an hour before. Chamomile will help you get to sleep, by making you feel more relaxed, but apparently it won't improve the quality of your sleep. So if you're the kind of person who tends to wake up several times a night, it may not help you.

Instead you might want to try a meditation or relaxation app. I use Prana Breath, but you could also look at Headspace or Insight Timer… or a number of others. Some are free to use, but have paid extras; others require a subscription.

Sometimes, though, insomnia and sleeping poorly isn't about you - it's about your bedding. For instance, a lot of people report that using weighted blankets gives them a sense of comfort that makes them feel 'hugged' and protected. That lets them sleep much better than regular blankets.

Bad pillows don't help. Many of us keep our pillows far too long, and they get squashed out of shape. Some pillows don't give much support for side sleepers. You'll know your pillow's at fault if you keep getting up in the morning with a crick in your neck. Getting a memory foam pillow can really help give you the support you need to sleep comfortably.

And of course a bad mattress is even worse. If you find yourself falling out of bed because the sides have collapsed, or pushed into a hole in the middle, because the foam's got compressed, of course you're not going to sleep well. You may be surprised to find out that you can order mattresses from Amazon!

If you live in the city and light outside is a problem, it may be worth thinking about blackout curtains. They do help.

If you want a good night's rest and to save money too, head off to Vipon to see what hot deals are available.

But sorry, if your significant other snores… I can't help you!
